About Us

Te Ūkaipō Māori Club Newcastle Incorporated (NC1300326) is based in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

We aim to create a unified and culturally adept Māori community in the Hunter Region.

We operate on the ancestral lands of the Awabakal people, and we acknowledge the Awabakal as the traditional custodians (kaitiaki) of this area, and ourselves as visitors (manuhiri). We acknowledge Awabakal Elders past, present and future.

Te Ūkaipō meaning - Mother, source of sustenance

The term Te Ūkaipō is used in a variety of contexts during kōrero (speeches, conversations).
The meaning of the word Ūkaipō evokes layers of physical, spiritual and emotional connections between a mother and child. For the purposes of our roopu (club) Te Ūkaipō represents a source of sustenance and nourishment for our people. A safe haven for members to Reconnect with our traditions and culture; Regain and stand proudly in our Māoritanga, and Retain our teachings, protocols and ways of being, as left to us by our ancestors for future generations.

We take an integrated, holistic and person-centered approach based on our own kaupapa, tikanga and values, which are encapsulated in the name Te Ūkaipō:

Whanaungatanga - developing respectful, reciprocal kinship-type relationships

Kotahitanga - identifying as one – sharing the earth

Arohatanga - love and compassion

Manaakitanga - respect, generosity, and care for others

Kaitiakitanga - practices of protecting and looking after the environment

Wairuatanga - the holistic wellbeing of an individual and the spiritual synergy of the collective

Our Structure

Our club operates under the NSW Associations Incorporation Act 2009, and follows NSW Fair Trading's Model Constitution.

Our association is made up of a committee including our President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer Roles.

We are supported by our Cultural, Social and Welfare subcommittees and chairpersons, who report directly to the committee.

Through strategic objectives, organisational alignment, and our diverse range of activities, the club intends to enhance governance practices, empower subcommittees, ensure financial transparency, promote social cohesion, uphold Māori culture, and provide support for the welfare of its members and the broader community.
